The brightest stars of Asian athletics were showcased today (May 26) at a press conference held in anticipation of the 26th Asian Athletics Championships, set to take place from May 27 to 31 in Gumi, South Korea.
Among the elite athletes in attendance were China’s Bin Feng and Jiayuan Song, the Philippines’ E.J. Obiena, Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, and South Korea’s own Woo Sang-hyeok.
General Dahlan Al-Hamad, President of the Asian Athletics emphasized the central role of athletes in the championships, describing them as “the heart of the event.” Despite their diverse backgrounds and cultures, he noted, they are united by a shared pursuit of excellence. Their achievements, he said, reflect the remarkable growth and potential of athletics across Asia. “Their success inspires countless young people across the continent,” he remarked, calling them “a powerful symbol of unity and excellence.” He also underscored that athletics is not solely about medals and records, but also about values such as fair play, respect, and integrity.
Kim Jang-Ho, Co-Chair of the Organising Committee, expressed confidence in the preparations and looked forward to the competition. “The groundwork has been laid—now it’s time for the action to begin,” he said, expressing hope for record-breaking performances across various events. He also highlighted the importance of media in bringing the excitement of the championships to fans worldwide, calling the event “a milestone for peace and prosperity across Asia.” Yook Hyunpyo, President of the Korea Association of Athletics Federations, echoed this sentiment, describing the championships as a powerful symbol of Asian solidarity.
The athletes themselves shared their thoughts and aspirations. High jumper Woo Sang-hyeok spoke of the motivation that comes with competing on home soil, vowing to give his utmost in front of a home crowd. Arshad Nadeem, returning to competition after his Olympic gold in the javelin at the 2024 Paris Games, expressed eagerness to perform well as part of his build-up to the World Championships in Tokyo this September.
China’s Bin Feng and Song Jiayuan, both medalists in Paris, are aiming to regain top form after a quiet start to the year. Feng, who claimed silver in the discus, and Bin, who earned bronze in the shot put, are determined to make their mark once again. For Norah Jeruto, the meet marks a significant return to competition following maternity leave. The 2022 World Champion in the 3000m steeplechase, with a personal best of 8:53.02, remains focused and humble, stating she will give her best and not take anything for granted.
Pole vaulter E.J. Obiena, silver medalist at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, expressed confidence in his current form. While clearing six meters again would be a remarkable feat, his primary goal is to win gold and set a new meet record. “Let’s pray for good weather,” he added with a smile.
