
On the third day of the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea, the medals were widely distributed, showcasing the growing depth of talent across the region. While traditional powerhouses - China, India, and Japan - continued to assert their dominance, nations such as Iran, Kazakhstan, Qatar, and South Korea also stepped into the spotlight with outstanding performances.
Iran’s Success
Iran enjoyed a strong showing, securing two gold medals. In the men’s shot put, Mohammadreza Tayebiseifkoti claimed victory with a powerful throw of 20.32m, edging out China’s Xing Jialiang (19.97m) and Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Daoud B Tolu (19.92m). Meanwhile, Reihaneh Mobini Arani delighted Iranian supporters with a gold medal in the women’s long jump, soaring to 6.40m. India’s Ancy Sojan Edappilly (6.33m) and Shaili Singh (6.30m) rounded out the podium.
Gold For Kazakhstan, Qatar, South Korea
Kazakhstan’s Daisy Jepkemei delivered a commanding performance in the women’s 10,000m, clocking an impressive 30:48.44 to take gold. Japan’s Ririka Hironaka (30:56.32) and Mikuni Yada (31:12.21g) put up strong efforts to secure silver and bronze respectively.
The men’s 4x400m relay saw a thrilling contest, with Qatar seizing the gold in 3:03.52, thanks to the stellar teamwork of Abderrahman Almoubarrake S Al Saleck, Bassem Mohamed A A Hemeida, Hatim Aitoulghazi and Ammar Ismail Y Ibrahim. India’s relay team - comprising Jay Kumar, Dharmveer Choudhary, Manu Thekkinalil Saji and Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi - finished just behind in 3:03.67, while China’s quartet of Liang Baotang, Zhang Qining, Ailixier Wumaier and Fu Haoran secured bronze in 3:03.73.
One of the most celebrated moments of the day belonged to South Korea’s high jumper, Sanghyeok Woo. The home favorite soared to 2.29m, surpassing Japan’s Tomohiro Shinno (2.26m) and Thailand’s Tawan Kaeodam (2.23m) to the delight of the local crowd.
Impressive India
India continued its impressive medal haul with three golds. In the men’s 3000m steeplechase, Avinash Mukund Sable (8:20.92) held off strong challenges from Japan’s Yutaro Niinae (8:24.41) and Qatar’s Zakaria Elahlaami (8:27.12) to take the title. The women’s 100m hurdles saw Jyoti Yarraji (12.96) edge past Japan’s Yumi Tanaka (13.07) and China’s Wu Yanni (13.07). Later, India’s relay team of Jisna Mathew, Rupal Rupal, Rajitha Kunja and Subha Venkatesan combined their efforts brilliantly to win the women’s 4x400m relay in 3:34.18, beating Vietnam (3:34.77) and Sri Lanka (3:36.67). The Vietnam team comprised Nguyen Thi Ngoc, Nguyen Thi Hang, Quach Thi Lan and Hoang Thi Minh Hanh. As for Sri Lanka, the four who formed the team were made up of Nadeesha Ramanayaka, Sayuri Lakshima Mendis Balapuwaduge, Jayeshi Uththara Mudugamuwa Hewage and Nishendra Harshani Fernando Maddappuli Arachchige.
Other Results
In other notable results, China’s Feng Bin dominated the women’s discus with a powerful throw of 61.90m, ahead of Thailand’s Subenrat Insaeng (57.68m) and Japan’s Nanaka Kori (56.48m). Japan, in turn, found success in the men’s 110m hurdles, where Rachid Muratake claimed gold in 13.22 seconds, fending off China’s Liu Junxi (13.31) and Qin Weibo (13.45).
